The "Toothpaste Test" Grip Hack for Explosive Clubhead Speed

When amateur golfers want to hit the ball further, their natural instinct is to try and swing with maximum physical effort. They stand over the ball, tense their shoulders, and lunge at impact.

But here is the hard truth: You cannot fix a lack of distance by simply trying to swing harder. In fact, raw muscular effort is usually the exact reason you are losing yardage.

The Problem: Choking Your Distance

The number one speed killer on the tee box is forearm and hand tension. When you desperately want to smash a long drive, you naturally squeeze the grip like you're trying to choke it.

Tight muscles are slow muscles. Excessive tension in your hands completely locks up your wrists, freezes your elbows, and destroys your ability to naturally flip the clubhead through impact. If your wrists cannot hinge and release smoothly, you are bleeding 15 to 20 yards of potential carry distance before your backswing even begins.

The Drill: The Toothpaste Test

Next time you practice at home or stand on the tee box, try this 10-second calibration drill to completely eliminate speed-killing tension:

  1. Take Your Driver Grip: Address an imaginary ball and place your hands on the club.
  2. Visualize the Tube: Imagine you are holding an open tube of toothpaste rather than a golf club.
  3. Calibrate Your Pressure: Your goal is to hold the club securely enough so it doesn't fly out of your hands, but soft enough that no toothpaste squeezes out of the tube.
  4. Target a 3 out of 10: On a scale of 1 to 10 (where 10 is a white-knuckle death grip and 1 is letting the club slip to the grass), aim for a relaxed 3 or 4.

Waggle the clubhead. If your wrists feel completely loose, fluid, and heavy, you are ready to swing. Loose muscles allow the club to snap through the hitting zone with maximum whip.

Train Raw Velocity On Autopilot

The Toothpaste Test ensures you stop losing the speed you already have. However, if you want to aggressively build new, explosive clubhead speed, you have to train your central nervous system to move faster.

The absolute fastest way to do that is by following a personalized, data-backed overspeed blueprint combined with a real-time tracking radar.
